Deep cleaning for ductless mini-splits in Minneapolis
A mini-split head pulls room air through a fine coil and a barrel-shaped blower wheel. Both collect dust, pet hair and cooking film, and in humid weather that buildup grows mold. Washing the filter is not enough; the coil and wheel need a real cleaning.

Quick answer
Ductless mini-split cleaning in Minneapolis covers the filters, evaporator coil, blower wheel, drain pan and condensate line on each indoor head, plus a rinse of the outdoor coil. At MSP, June averages a 56 degree dew point, so heads that run through humid weeks are the ones that grow mold and start to smell.

Why a filter wash is not enough
The washable filters on a mini-split catch the larger dust. Fine particles, grease and moisture get past them onto the coil and the blower wheel, a long barrel with dozens of small blades. Over time those blades cake over, airflow drops, the coil freezes more easily and the head starts to smell musty when it turns on.
A proper cleaning bags the head so water and debris go into a bucket, not down the wall, then cleans the coil and the wheel with a low-pressure rinse and a coil cleaner, and flushes the drain.

Deep cleaning a wall head
We protect the wall and floor, remove the front cover and filters, and fit a cleaning bag under the head so rinse water drains into a bucket. The coil is treated with a no-rinse or rinse coil cleaner and flushed with low pressure so the fins are not bent. Louvers and covers are washed separately. The head is dried, reassembled and run in cooling and heating to confirm airflow and temperature before we move to the next one, and we note any head that is noisy or slow to respond.
Blower wheel and coil cleaning
The blower wheel is where most of the buildup and the musty smell live. On most wall heads we clean the wheel in place, rotating it by hand while rinsing each blade; heavily caked wheels are removed and cleaned on a bench. A clean wheel can noticeably increase airflow and quiet the head. We check the coil fins for damage, and if the smell persists after cleaning, we look for standing water in the drain pan and check that the head is level so condensate flows the right way.
Condensate line and pan service
Every head drains condensate in cooling mode, and algae in the pan or line eventually backs water up into the head and down the wall. We clear the pan, flush the line, test the condensate pump where there is one, and confirm water leaves the house where it should. Heads that drain through a pump get the pump's reservoir cleaned and its safety switch tested so it shuts the head off rather than overflowing onto the wall or floor below.
What we see on calls around Minneapolis
At MSP, June brings an average dew point near 56 degrees and highs close to 79, with July highs climbing toward 84. Heads in bedrooms and upstairs rooms run hard through those humid weeks, pulling a lot of water out of the air, and that constant moisture on the coil and blower wheel is what feeds the musty smell. We recommend cleaning in spring, before those weeks start.

Cost factors
What moves the price
Mini-split cleaning is priced per head, with the outdoor unit included.
- Number of heads. Each indoor head is cleaned separately.
- Head type. Wall heads are quickest; cassettes and ducted units take longer.
- Buildup. Heavily caked wheels may need removal.
- Mounting height. High heads need ladders and more setup.
- Drain condition. Clogged lines and pumps take extra time.
- Outdoor coil. Rinsed as part of the visit.
- Repairs found. Quoted separately.
